A Stanza from Huineng Master

Writer: Lu YuanLu Yuan

Stanza - Chapter Six (The Repentance) of The Six Patriarch’s Altar Sutra

People who are not clear with the Truth only aim to build good fortune in life. They do not cultivate Tao*. They say building good fortune is the Tao.

Actions like making donations and supporting temples will be rewarded with countless fortune. However the three toxins in heart continue to drive the person to misbehave.

People assume that the misbehaviors can be excused or corrected in the acts of doing good things, but the fact is that fortune will come, and the sins remain still.

The origin of sins is in heart. The only way to eliminate sins is to expel the toxins from heart. Repent deeply and genuinely.

In the sudden moment of realization, one sees the Truth & the True Self, that person will wake up to repent on the real matter. From then on, the person eliminates the wrongs, behave righteously, and no more conducts of sins.

Frequently observe the True Self is important in learning Tao. That will put you in the same group of all Buddhas.

My Patriarch only passed down this teaching of Sudden Realization, in the wish that all sentient beings will realize their True Self and come to the understanding of “All is One”.

When cravings arise, search for the True Self. With the stand of True Self, you will be able to break away distractions from all kinds of circumstances (forms). Detaching forms is cleansing the mind.

Work diligently to realize True Self. Don’t be slouchy. When death comes, there will be no more second thought and life is over.

If the person has gained the realization of True Self, s/he should piously namaste to plead for the Enlightenment*.

*Tao in Chinese means the path, the way, the Truth. Cultivate Tao means to follow the teaching of Truth to act, speak and think. Modify and correct one's old and habitual way of living and uplift the spiritual level.

*Plead for the Enlightenment refers to receiving the recognition from Enlightened Master. Tao practitioners/cultivators in the ancient times must realize True Self before they can gain the recognition from Masters. This recognition is also known as "Acquiring Tao".
